You are invited to take a trip across the Karst - take in the characteristic autumn colors of endless rows of vineyards and enjoy some culinary delicacies in one of the "osmice" restaurants in the Karst or in its surroundings.
The tradition of osmice restaurants was introduced by decree of the empress Maria Theresa (1717-1780), giving wine producers 8 days in which they could serve their wine. This gave them the license to sell the remainder of their previous year’s wine for 8 days in their own wineries. Alongside the wine, osmice restaurants also offer up the delicacies of the Karst, and can be spotted by a wooden direction sign and a branch of ivy, the so-called frasca, which remains fresh for exactly 8 days. Wine producers can hold an osmica restaurant up to twice a year for 10 days., and they may only provide food they produced at their farm. This is the origin of the osmice and the tradition of fastening ivy on the door to inform people that osmica is now open.
Come and experience the excellent Karst delicacies and a glass of teran!
Watch a short video on the celebration in Sežana, where the people of the nearby village Dutovlje set up an osmica, offering štruklji dumplings, prosciutto, teran, and white wine. Well, cheers! See you in an osmica!
All information on osmice and when they are open for business are available on the website www.osmice.info.
