The Karst Wine Road
CONNECTING NEARLY 170 PRODUCERS OF KARST DELICACIES
The Wine Road passes along the sprawling, limestone Karst plateau, which is covered by terra rossa. This is the home of the Karst bora wind, and the warmest rays of sunshine. Under the favorable weather conditions the vines took to the dark red soil, growing excellent grapes that make for premium quality wine. A crucial part of this whole story is the wine cellars, which charm every visitor; there is a reason they are also referred to as “hram”, i.e. temple in the local dialect. Some of them are cut into the solid rock, others fashioned inside karst caves, while other still built by hardworking men. No true Kars wine cellar should be without a piece of proper and tasty cured meat, slowly acquiring the taste and character of the Karst.
